WoundHer Woman, #99

Name: WoundHer Woman
Number: 99
Age: 41

What is your skating position?
Blocker

Where did you grow up?
Lakewood, CA

What do you do for a living?
I get to tell people what to do with their money to make money.

What are your favorite hobbies (besides derby)?
My family is my world.

What are your pre-derby sports, if any?
Soccer was my sport. 12 years, 18 teams, 6 were co-ed.

Did you have any skating experience before joining derby? I want to thank Skate Depot in Cerritos.

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I've had 4 kids not just the 3 you see. My angel is always with me.

How and why did you get involved in roller derby?
In 2010ish, my friend Becca called me up and said I got this flier (OCRG) and we have to do Roller Derby. I was all for it. I started asking for skates every Christmas. Not until Dec 2015 did I get my first pair of skates.

How long have you been involved with derby?
January 2, 2016 was my very first practice. I've been rolling since.

What’s the story behind your derby name and number? How did you pick yours?
My kids will tell you "My mom and Wonder Woman have never been seen in the same room. You know there's a reason". 99 was my uncle’s baseball and football number. As a kid I used it for softball. Even JJ Watt (Houston Texan) uses my number :)

Do you have a signature move?
I don't think I do. I think I'm too new to have 1 beat down move.

What was the easiest move for you to learn? What was the hardest?
The T-Stop was the first move I mastered (funny thing is I failed it on my first skills test). The hardest is timing my hits. Practice makes perfect though.

What is your favorite derby event during the year?
I haven't really formed an opinion on that yet.

What is your favorite derby story so far?
Any story about a weird injury I got.

What do you wish you’d known about derby before you joined? How expensive it would be. RIP my wallet.

In what ways has roller derby changed your life?
I feel more confident, and strong.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about joining derby?
You will feel a bit awkward. You might not know anybody at first but it's OK. You will make friends. You will even have 1 friend that becomes your ride and die. No matter what she has your back. She will become your derby wife. Her Monster to your WoundHer.  And don't forget it's never too soon to work on strength and endurance. You need it.
