What is your skating position?
Blocker

Where did you grow up?
Born and raised in Orange County

What do you do for a living?
Mortgage Project Manager

What are your favorite hobbies (besides derby)?
What else is there other than derby? I mean really?!?! Hiking, spending time with my family, framily and friends.

What are your pre-derby sports, if any?
None. Skated some when I was younger. If only derby had been around for kids then!!!

Did you have any skating experience before joining derby?
I had some roller figure skating classes when I was younger and went to the roller rink with school. It was NOTHING for many years :-)

What would people be surprised to learn about you?
LOL that I play roller derby.

How and why did you get involved in roller derby?
I moved back to OC a year ago (March 2016) –it was a sudden, unplanned move and I had been living in Ventura for 12 years. After about 8 months of getting settled, I realized I needed to get out and DO something and meet people. Sitting on my couch on a Sunday watching football trying to think of something I really wanted to do… BOOM derby! Emailed the league on Sunday, Wednesday was orientation, signed up and started a week and ½ later.

How long have you been involved with derby?
I started with OCRD in Oct 2016.

What’s the story behind your derby name? How did you pick yours?
Thanks to Lezlie Gropes… the day I passed min skills, Jukes called me Polly Pocket, Lez cranked it up a notch with Polly Pocket Rocket. I loved it more than anything else I had been thinking about.

Do you have a signature move?
Standing straight up – still working on keeping my butt down!!!

What was the easiest move for you to learn? What was the hardest?
Easiest - right side transitions (left still sucks). Hardest – plow stops (still a work in progress)

What is your favorite derby event during the year?
My first bout on 3/18. I had about 20 people in my cheering section with signs and everything. Every player on both teams played hard, but we still had a great time and laughed a lot with both teams. It was amazing!

What is your favorite derby story so far?
Not sure one sticks out.

What do you wish you’d known about derby before you joined?
The amazing people I would meet – I would have joined sooner.

In what ways has roller derby changed your life?
Really in two ways. (1) Having never played team sports before – to be surrounded by such an amazing group of woman is truly inspiring. I learn something every time we are together from their diversity, strength and smarts. (2) That I can DO this. It is an empowering sport! I still have much to learn and grow, but every day is progress.

What advice do you have for someone thinking about joining derby?
DO It! You will have days once you join where you will ask “what did I get myself into?” and then you will have days where you walk away from practice saying “I GOT THIS!”. The I GOT THIS days become more frequent and it’s a blast to skate with these amazing woman.
