Name: Felonious Feline
What do you do for the league?
I am a Referee/NSO and I sing the National Anthem at our bouts.
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
What do you do for a living?
I am a Systems Integration Specialist.
What are your favorite hobbies (besides derby)?
I love to perform in Musicals (Singing, Acting, Dancing). I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, with an emphasis on Vocal Performance (Commercial Music and Broadway). I also love spending time with my dog.
What are your pre-derby sports, if any?
None. I was never very athletic.
Did you have any skating experience before joining derby?
Not much. I had skated maybe twenty years before I started Derby when I was still a teenager. But when I started Derby, I pretty much had to learn the basics all over again, and get over the fear of falling.
What is a fun fact about you?
My first musical that I did after I got out of college was “Hair”, the sixties rock musical about Hippies in the late 60’s during the Vietnam era. I did the nude scene. A good friend of mine said, “Well congratulations! Your first professional musical and you’re naked on stage within the first hour!” We had a great laugh about that.
My favorite type of food is Mexican. My favorite specific food is probably corn. I love it in all its incarnations. Corn on the cob, popcorn, those yummy little corn cakes you get at El Torito, cornbread, tamales, candy corn (Okay...I know that is not officially corn, but I still love them.)
If you had a secret power, what would it be?
To be able to communicate with animals
How and why did you get involved in roller derby?
A friend brought me to an OC bout and I just fell in love with it at first sight. At the time I joined, there were still a lot of tutus and fishnets. The whole thing was very theatrical. That appealed to me.
How long have you been involved with derby?
December 5, 2018 will be my 8 year Derbyversary.
What’s the story behind your derby name? How did you pick yours?
I have always loved cats, and have always felt somewhat feline. I wanted a name that had kind of a tough element to it, so Felonious seemed like a good adjective to pair with it. I love the alliteration of Felonious Feline too.
What's the meaning behind your number?
My number, 9LVS, translates to 9 Lives. The amount of lives a cat is said to have.
What is your favorite derby story so far?
At Rollercon a few years back, a girl said to me, “Felonious Feline? You are one of my derby heroes! Will you sign my cast?” It was very special to me to be recognized and know that I had inspired someone. There have been so many people in derby who have been my heroes, and I was equally gushing when I got to meet them.
In what ways has roller derby changed your life?
It has given me a community and a huge extended family. I have met amazing people from all over the world, and we share the same love for this sport. It has allowed me to realize that I can be athletic, and it has given me an activity that allows me to exercise both my body and my mind
What advice do you have for someone new to derby?
When you think you have reached your limit of what you can do, keep pushing. You will be amazed at what you can learn and what your body can actually do. The first time I had to do bear crawls in skates around the track, I could barely get ten feet before I just collapsed down onto the track. But I kept pushing and growing. My strength of will got me past those hurdles and I am so glad that I did not give up.
