What do you do for the league?
I bring an air of awesomeness to the league that is enjoyed by all. I’m also on Street Team.
What is your skating position?
Where did you grow up?
Bred, born, and raised in Anaheim.
What do you do for a living?
My official title is Instructional Support Technician, but I call myself the lab bitch!
What are your favorite hobbies (besides derby)?
I like gardening, sewing, woodworking, crafting……I don’t think there is a hobby I don’t like.
What are your pre-derby sports, if any?
I was an artistic skater until I was about 12, then I played tennis very poorly for a while. I also tried water polo and some recreational softball, but cycling was the one thing that I did throughout everything.
Did you have any skating experience before joining derby?
Yes and I have the pictures to prove it.
What is a fun fact about you?
My son says that I am awesome. In fact, I brag about my awesomeness so much that when I received an award at work my name was written as Awesome Dawn.
Sushi, burgers, pizza, Korean BBQ. French fries are yummy too. Pretty much if it tastes good I put it in my mouth.
If you had a secret power, what would it be?
To drink at RollerCon and not break myself.
How and why did you get involved in roller derby?
I met Canadian Bacon at a work function and as we were talking she mentioned that she played roller derby. At that point I basically yelled at her “I WANT TO PLAY ROLLER DERBY!!! DO YOU HAVE SKATES I CAN BORROW?” I was at the rink a week later.
How long have you been involved with derby?
It will be 2 years this November.
What’s the story behind your derby name?
I got stuck in the hall talking to coworkers when one of them asked about roller derby. During that conversation they asked me what my derby name was going to be and I told them I didn’t know, but I would like it to be plant related because I did my master thesis with a plant. That’s when my friend suggested I should be Bella-Dawna.
What's the meaning behind your number?
I didn’t have a numbers preference so Jonslaught said I should just use my birth year. Worst decision ever! What I have learned from this is not to ever listen to Jonslaught! (Please note the extreme sarcasm in that sentence)
What is your favorite derby story so far?
This one time at RollerCon I was skating in the Figure Skaters vs Hockey Skaters bout and Bonnie Thunders was on my team. That should be the greatest story right there, but during that bout Bonnie took advantage of a power jam by being twirled up by another skater onto his shoulders. He then skated towards the pack to the roar of the crowd. Then it got even better when after the game, not realizing Bonnie Thunders was next to me, I said “I can’t wait to get this skirt off”. Her reply was “Yeah, for a minute there I thought I was getting taller, but then I realized that my skirt was getting shorter.” Of course I had the super witty reply of “haha” while my brain was saying “BONNIE THUNDERS SAID WORDS TO ME!”
In what ways has roller derby changed your life?
I am so much healthier and stronger than I have been in a while.
What advice do you have for someone new to derby?
Roller derby is a hard sport but worth it. Although you see the advanced skaters rolling around like they were born with skates on their feet, they used to spend just as much time on the ground as you. Each of those ladies you see out there are where they are because they have continued even after all the falls and bruises. It’s pushing through the difficult times, not the easy times, that makes you a better person.
