Name: Demi Gorgon
What do you do for the league?
I do a little bit of graphic design, photography and videography.
What is your skating position?
I’m a blocker. Before joining I thought I wanted to be a jammer cuz… WHIP IT… but damn, it’s no joke jamming, props to our jammers and pivots. I’ll block or brace all day every day.
Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in the Philippines but have been living in Tustin since I was 10.
What do you do for a living?
I work for an online info product company where I’m the Jane of All Trades I suppose. I do a bit of designing web and print content, filming, editing videos, managing virtual video editors, and running live streams. I also run an online business with my wife at ICY Productions where our goal is to help take the intimidation out of creating videos by breaking it down into simple and easy to follow steps.
What are your favorite hobbies (besides derby)?
Archery, mountain biking, doing things from Groupon ‘things to do’ but mostly napping and shopping.
What are your pre-derby sports, if any?
I played basketball for Tustin High School and I was the one always diving for the ball (so much so that I started wearing knee pads) and getting fouls called on me in the paint… hahaha makes sense that I joined derby.
Did you have any skating experience before joining derby?
Inline skates yes, roller skates NEVER. First time I put roller skates on I was so scared and unstable. It’s amazing what practice and such supportive teammates can do for you!
What is a fun fact about you?
I wore sneakers with my white dress on our wedding day, specifically Jordan 11’s. I knew that’s what I’d want to do long before I even met my wife.
White chocolate raspberry truffle **DROOL**
If you had a secret power, what would it be?
Teleportation! I was going to pick flying but that would still take time.
How and why did you get involved in roller derby?
It’s something that I had always wanted to try since someone came up to me over 10 years ago at some food fair and said I should join. Fast forward to 2018 when I watched the Try Guys Try Roller Derby video and it reignited that interest.
How long have you been involved with derby?
I joined March of 2018. Though I’m still pretty new, I know it’s something that I’ll always want to have in my life.
What’s the story behind your derby name? How did you pick yours?
Have you seen the Netflix original show Stranger Things? There’s this scary creature called a Demogorgon (Demi Gorgon) from a parallel dimension known as the Upside Down.
What's the meaning behind your number?
I was going to pick the name Eleven, one of the main characters from Stranger Things, but I wasn’t sure if that was allowed, so I picked the number 411 instead which actually means: for Eleven.
What is your favorite derby story so far?
During my first interleague scramble, Princesses vs Villains, I dressed up as Jafar. My super tall, feathered hat and painted on mustache stayed on throughout the entire bout! Right before halftime I fell and didn’t get up fast enough. One of my teammates skated backwards right into me and I went between his legs… and still my hat stayed on my helmet!
In what ways has roller derby changed your life?
OCRD has given me an outlet to have a space for myself to do “my own thing” on the side. It’s given me new friends and an amazing group of humans that are super supportive. From learning how to skate, to learning how to play, to learning all the new things all the time gives me something to work towards and to continue to learn to become a better derby girl.
What advice do you have for someone new to derby?
Stick with it. Things aren’t always going to be easy, but as long as you stick to it and keep practicing the things that are hardest for you to do, one day you’ll do them and BAM you’re there! Just like anything in life, keep in mind that PRACTICE MAKES PROGRESS.
