 FAQs

  • Nope! We'll teach you everything you need to know. If you’re new to skating when you join OCRD, you’ll begin in our Fresh Squeezed program.

This is your first stop to learn skating fundamentals in a pressure-free environment. Emphasis is placed on proper skating form. Learn striding, stopping, turns, backward skating, balance, speed and agility all in an effort to prepare you for fun recreational skating or roller derby.  The focus is on learning how to skate for derby and the general points of derby game play.

Skaters at this level should be studying the WFTDA rules on their own and watching derby bouts (in person and on video) to create a basic working knowledge of the game.

  • A good attitude and willingness to get back up again after you fall. No previous roller skating or sports experience is necessary! We will teach you how to skate through our Fresh Squeezed program. Don't worry --  no one will be hip checking you on your first day!

You must be 18 or older to join OC Roller Derby.

You will need several pieces of required safety gear in order to attend practice:

    • quad skates (no inline skates!)

    • helmet

    • wrist guards

    • elbow pads

    • knee pads

    • mouth guard

Don’t have gear? We have a library of loaner gear to get you started and find the right equipment.

  • We practice at an outdoor rink in Garden Grove on:

    • Tuesdays from 7pm-9pm

    • Thursdays from 7pm-9:30pm

    • Saturdays from 8:30am-11:30am

  • Absolutely! We’d be happy to have you at practice.

Please email membership@ocderby.com for additional details regarding transfers.

To drop in at a practice, please complete this form. Our practices our closed (members only) the Thursday before a bout. Check out our schedule of events to see when our next bout is.

  • You’re in luck! We are always in need of skating and non-skating officials! No experience necessary. We will provide training and teach you how to skate free of charge. Please email membership@ocderby.com for more information.
